HYPERBOREANS is a project formed by composer, Enrique Eboli in 2009. Born out of a desire to create "heavy music" that wasn't necessarily "metal". It wasn't until 2014 that HYPERBOREANS released its first and only proper full length album, Numina. An ambitious record if nothing else. Playing within a framework of shifting sonic landscapes. At times atmospheric and progressive, at others, sparse and contemplative. Numina was primarily composed around Piano, distorted guitars and drums, framed within a latticework of field recordings, synthesizers and mangled sounds. There was a conscious choice to have the music reside in a state of liminality and ambiguity. Touching upon the esoteric nature of dreams, memory and the power of personal mythologies. Without mincing words, it is at times, a flawed, clumsy and musically immature work as a whole. But it is marked by a purity of impulse. It fulfills its purpose, taking the listener on a journey. And as one reviewer once put it, "leaves them bewildered". After some distance and reflection in the 10 years since it was released, it seemed a fitting time to shine a light on it again.
In commemoration, the new Bandcamp version includes 2 bonus tracks. One song, ‘Lanterns Low’ that did not make it on the album in 2014 and a newer track ‘Corrino’, that was written and recorded in the intervening years (2015-2016) for the since stalled follow up album to Numina. There are drives full of HYPERBOREANS songs in various stages of completion. Whether or not we ever get another HYPERBOREANS album remains to be seen. But, Numina is the record we have and she deserves to be heard.
